NAVP
2008 Conference Annual Business Meeting
Minutes
National Association of Vision
Professionals
Annual
Business Meeting, Thursday August 7,
2008
Nashville, Tennessee
CALL TO
ORDER: By Michele Hartlove,
President, at 12:10 p.m.
Introductions of attending the meeting.
Michele and Jim McKechnie thanked all in
attendance and recognized the exhibitors
(School Health, Pediavision, Vision
Research).
SECRETARY'S REPORT: Jeff reviewed
the report from the 2007 Chicago
meeting. As the original minutes were
lost when Jeff's PC crashed, he thanked
Jim McKechnie for reconstructing the
minutes from memory.
TREASURER'S REPORT:
Treasurer Jim McKechnie reported NAVP
conference income at $2,625.00 with a
few more registrations not yet posted.
Although a specific expense report for
the conference was not given as most
bills had yet to be submitted, based on
Conference Chair Sylvia Lorenz
estimations, it was felt the conference
would break even and maybe be slightly
in the black. Regardless, NAVP is still
in the black.
Corrections to the
conference/registration report were made
(Linda Pinnell registration posted twice
and Lori Short's registration not
posted). Motion by Gina Murphy to accept
corrected report approved.
ELECTION
OF OFFICERS: Michele presented
slate of officers for the years
2008-2010.
Linda
Pinnell - President
Jeff
Robinson - Vice President
Michele
Hartlove - Secretary
Jim
McKechnie - Treasurer
Sylvia
Lorenz - Parliamentarian
A motion
to accept the slate as proposed was made
by Gina Murphy, second by Jeff Robinson.
After discussion the motion was approved
unanimously.
Membership Chair (Gina Streepy) not
present. Michele encouraged everyone to
consider themselves as a membership
chair and work at recruiting new
members. Jim challenged everyone to
recruit at least one new member this
year. Jim also took a moment to thank
our exhibitors for their support over
the years. Michele thanked Sylvia Lorenz
for her work as conference chair and
presented her with a plaque.
Discussion followed about the format of
the conference with the presentations
taking place off-site from the hotel
(meeting held at Vanderbilt Eye Center).
General consensus was that it is not a
problem, as long as there is
transportation to the site. Most agree
it would be a savings to the Association
to continue holding it at locations such
as this as many members present have
affiliations/associations with teaching
universities. Conference host/locations
for the next three years were discussed
with Baltimore, New York and New Orleans
as potential sites.
With no
further business to discuss, the meeting
was adjourned at 1:10 p.m.

NAVP Membership
What is
NAVP?
The National Association of Vision
Professionals (NAVP) was established in May
1978 as an organization concerned with
prevention, detection and follow-up of
vision services for pre-school and
school-aged children, and adults.
Objectives
Specifically, its primary objectives are:
1. To serve as a forum for ideas on vision
conservation and eye health of all people.
2. To provide leadership and planning to
improve and expand vision conservation and
eye health programs nationally.
3. To coordinate and cooperate with agencies
and groups responsible for the provision of
services aimed at vision conservation and
eye health.
4. To develop and promote educational
programs for the public in vision
conservation, eye safety and eye health.
5. To promote the development of training
programs for individuals preparing for
careers in the field of vision conservation
and eye health.
6. To develop professional standards for
employment in the field.
Membership
Eligibility
A person whose main task is vision-related
is eligible for membership in NAVP.
Ophthalmologists, optometrists, vision
teachers, nurses, industrial safety
personnel, screening technicians, para-professionals,
volunteers and others concerned with vision
health may be members.
Annual
Conferences
Each conference is hosted by a member agency
in the member's state. This provides
individuality in conference planning and
enables attendees to hear a variety of
speakers on a wide range of topics
concerning vision. These conferences have
provided the opportunity to build a vision
network that did not exist until 1976.
